Overview

Neonatal medicine concerns the health and care of newborn infants during the first weeks of life, a period of rapid physiological transition and heightened vulnerability. The neonatal period demands specialized attention because newborns, particularly those born preterm or critically ill, face distinctive risks including infection, respiratory and cardiovascular compromise, and complications of immature organ systems. Research in this area examines a range of neonatal concerns, including the restriction of antimicrobial use in neonatal intensive care, the relationship between placental and umbilical-cord anatomy and neonatal outcomes, and conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants. Studies also address the burden of traumatic stress and burnout among maternal and neonatal healthcare staff, the use of microRNA expression as potential biomarkers for newborn disease, training models for neonatal procedures, the detection of congenital heart defects, and maternal and fetal outcomes of delivery. The care of neonates requires recognition that physiology, disease presentation, and therapeutic responses differ markedly from those of older children and adults, and that events in this period can have lasting consequences for growth and development. The significance of neonatal medicine lies in its focus on a critical window for survival and long-term health, where timely recognition and management of illness can prevent organ damage, developmental delay, and death.
