Overview

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord, disrupting nerve signalling. The resulting demyelination and inflammation produce a wide and variable range of neurological symptoms, including fatigue, sensory disturbances, visual and motor impairments, and cognitive changes, which may follow relapsing-remitting or progressive courses. MS is among the most common causes of non-traumatic neurological disability in young adults, and its unpredictable nature poses substantial physical, psychological, and social challenges. Key areas of study include the underlying immunology and the biology of oligodendrocytes and myelin repair, disease-modifying and symptomatic therapies, rehabilitation, and the management of comorbidities and environmental influences such as vitamin D and ultraviolet exposure. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research and related disorders reflecting these themes, including studies on pediatric MS presentation, neurovascular reactivity after relapses, evidence-based occupational therapy for rehabilitation, ultraviolet B phototherapy trials, disability and prognostic factors in cohort studies, COVID-19 vaccine safety in people with MS, coping strategies during the pandemic, and oligodendrocyte development and Wnt signalling. Differential diagnoses such as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) are also addressed.
