Overview

The central nervous system (CNS) is the part of the nervous system comprising the brain and spinal cord, which together receive, process, and integrate information and coordinate the activity of the rest of the body. It governs functions such as thought, memory, behavior, sensation, movement, and coordination, and it communicates with the peripheral nervous system to respond to internal and external stimuli. Protected by bone, membranes, and the blood-brain barrier, the CNS is also vulnerable to a range of disorders, including inflammatory, demyelinating, infectious, neoplastic, and degenerative conditions, making its study central to neurology and related fields. In the context of multiple sclerosis and related disorders, the CNS is examined in terms of disease processes, diagnosis, and the broader biology of the brain and spinal cord. The journal's articles include work on the epidemiology of malignant neoplasms of the CNS, cranial nerve involvement in pediatric multiple sclerosis, and adaptive CNS changes in chronic disease. Additional studies address progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in the setting of lymphoma and chemotherapy, CNS involvement in Behcet's disease, the biochemistry of controlled breathing, neurogenetic and developmental topics such as Tay-Sachs disease and Hox genes in brain development, and post-COVID neuroinflammatory conditions, reflecting research themes in CNS disorders, diagnosis, and neurobiology.
