The central nervous system (CNS) is the part of the nervous system comprising the brain and spinal cord, which together receive, process, and integrate information and coordinate the activity of the rest of the body. It governs functions such as thought, memory, behavior, sensation, movement, and coordination, and it communicates with the peripheral nervous system to respond to internal and external stimuli. Protected by bone, membranes, and the blood-brain barrier, the CNS is also vulnerable to a range of disorders, including inflammatory, demyelinating, infectious, neoplastic, and degenerative conditions, making its study central to neurology and related fields. In the context of multiple sclerosis and related disorders, the CNS is examined in terms of disease processes, diagnosis, and the broader biology of the brain and spinal cord.
