Overview

Medical care is the provision of services by qualified health professionals to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness and injury and to support the health and well-being of individuals and communities. It spans the continuum from prevention and early detection through acute treatment, ongoing management, and rehabilitation, and it depends on competent providers, accessible facilities, and coordinated systems. Research in this area examines the delivery and reassessment of medical care in changing circumstances, including the clinical and epidemiological reappraisal prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the medical management of specific populations and conditions, such as survivors of sexual assault and patients with sickle cell disease. Studies also address barriers to care among marginalized and displaced groups, including refugees, orphans affected by HIV, and victims of sexual violence, as well as the care of children, the management of unintentional childhood injuries, and the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence into clinical practice. The significance of medical care lies in its direct bearing on quality of life, the reduction of mortality and morbidity, and the narrowing of health disparities through timely diagnosis and treatment. Effective medical care requires attention not only to clinical competence but also to access, equity, and the social conditions that shape health outcomes. Understanding how care is delivered and improved is central to advancing health.
