Overview

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to specialized clothing, devices, and barriers worn to protect individuals from exposure to physical, chemical, biological, and other workplace and infectious hazards. In the context of infection prevention, PPE includes items such as masks and respirators, gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and footwear, which together help interrupt the transmission of pathogens between patients, healthcare workers, and the wider community. The effectiveness of PPE depends on appropriate selection for the specific hazard, correct fit, proper donning and doffing, and consistent use as part of a broader system of infection prevention and control. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of PPE alongside supply-chain resilience, training, and waste management, and highlighted gaps in awareness and availability, particularly in resource-limited settings. Key aspects of the field include worker knowledge, attitudes, and practices; the design and adequacy of specific protective items; and the integration of PPE into infection-control programmes. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research reflecting these themes, including studies on PPE awareness among laboratory and healthcare workers, tuberculosis infection control during the pandemic, eye and facial protectors, biomedical waste management, supply-chain impacts, and knowledge and practices of infection prevention and control among healthcare workers.
