Overview

Vascular anatomy is the study of the structure and arrangement of the blood vessels of the body: the arteries that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, the veins that return blood to it, and the capillaries where exchange of oxygen, nutrients and waste takes place between blood and tissues. It describes how these vessels branch, course and connect to supply every region and organ, the variations that occur between individuals, and the relationships of vessels to nerves and other structures, often as neurovascular bundles. Vascular anatomy is a foundational sub-discipline of human anatomy and is essential to clinical practice, since accurate knowledge of vessel pathways underpins safe surgery, the placement of catheters and grafts, the interpretation of imaging, and the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the circulation. Research in the International Journal of Human Anatomy and related OpenAccessPub titles addresses regional and neurovascular anatomy across the body, including the branching pattern of the medial calcaneal neurovascular bundle in the foot, comparative study of mandibular neurovascular canals, the anatomical structures relevant to pericardiocentesis, and a vascular case of gastric varices secondary to left gastric vein stenosis. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to vascular anatomy and the study of the body's blood vessels.
