Overview
The hip is the ball-and-socket joint that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the pelvis, providing the body with the weight-bearing support, stability, and range of motion needed for standing, walking, and most lower-limb movement. Because it carries load throughout life, the hip is a frequent site of injury and age-related disease, including fractures, osteoarthritis, and the joint damage that may ultimately require surgical replacement. Research published in the International Journal of Human Anatomy and related OpenAccessPub titles examines the hip across these clinical dimensions. Work has addressed secondary hip fractures among older adults with a prior fracture history, sleep disturbances as a factor in hip fractures, and the links between osteoarthritis and falls. Other studies consider hip osteoarthritis and its disability burden, vitamin D in relation to arthroplasty-associated joint infection, and the biomechanics of hip flexion and landing angle in young athletes, including drop-jump performance in children and soccer players. A case report further documents a rare reaction to a titanium-alloy hip prosthesis. Together these contributions span the hip's anatomy, biomechanics, age-related pathology, and reconstructive treatment. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the hip joint.
