Overview
In human anatomy, the head is the uppermost region of the body, housing the brain and the principal organs of special sense and forming the origin of the respiratory and digestive tracts. Its skeleton, the skull, comprises the neurocranium, which encloses and protects the brain and its meninges, and the viscerocranium, or facial skeleton; the bones are united at sutures and, in the newborn, separated by fontanelles that accommodate brain growth. The head contains the orbits and visual apparatus, the structures of hearing and balance, the nasal and oral cavities, and a rich array of cranial nerves and vasculature, and it is conventionally studied together with the neck as an integrated region of complex topographical anatomy. The head is a frequent site of trauma, including traumatic brain injury, as well as of congenital, vascular, and neoplastic disease, making its clinical anatomy central to surgery, ophthalmology, and neurology. Human anatomy examines these structures through dissection, imaging, and developmental and clinical correlation. The peer-reviewed research within this journal's anatomy corpus includes work on cranial and neuroanatomical structure, such as the newborn cranial vault, the microanatomy of thalamic radiations, and head-and-neck clinical conditions, which reflect the discipline's focus on the detailed organization of the head.
