Overview

Cardiovascular system anatomy is the study of the structure of the heart and the network of blood vessels that circulate blood throughout the body. The cardiovascular, or circulatory, system consists of the heart, which acts as a muscular pump, and the arteries, veins, and capillaries through which blood travels. The heart's four chambers, two atria and two ventricles, together with its valves, direct blood through the pulmonary circulation, where it is oxygenated in the lungs, and the systemic circulation, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues and returns deoxygenated blood and waste. Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins return it, and the thin-walled capillaries enable the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste at the tissue level. Understanding this anatomy, including the coronary vessels that supply the heart itself and the great vessels that connect it to the rest of the body, is fundamental to physiology and to clinical medicine. As a topic within human anatomy, cardiovascular system anatomy provides the structural foundation for understanding how the body maintains circulation and tissue perfusion. This page provides an encyclopedic overview of the anatomy of the heart and blood vessels, presenting a general account rather than citing studies that do not directly address cardiovascular anatomy.
