Overview

Anatomy is the branch of biological and medical science concerned with the structure and organisation of living organisms and their constituent parts, including the form, position, and relationships of organs, tissues, and systems within the body. Human anatomy in particular underpins clinical practice, providing the structural framework for diagnosis, surgery, imaging, and the understanding of physiology and disease. The discipline matters because precise anatomical knowledge is foundational to medicine and surgery, to safe procedural practice, and to interpreting normal variation that can have clinical consequences. Research published under this topic spans gross, clinical, comparative, and educational anatomy. Studies examine neurovascular and nerve structures, such as mandibular neurovascular canals compared between humans and great apes, communicating branches of the mental and facial nerves, the posterior tibial nerve in the tarsal tunnel, and variant trifurcation of the ulnar nerve in Guyon's canal. Other articles address clinical anatomy of the newborn cranial vault, anthropometric measurement such as the nasal index, and procedural anatomy relevant to pericardiocentesis. The collection also reflects anatomy education and history, including the role of basic sciences in clinical training, the use of virtual interactive brain atlases in neuroanatomy teaching, and the history of embalming, alongside occasional work in plant anatomy. Together the articles illustrate anatomy as both a descriptive science and an applied clinical foundation.
