Overview
Ischemic heart disease (IHD), also known as coronary artery disease, is a condition in which the heart muscle receives an inadequate supply of blood and oxygen because the coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked, most often by atherosclerotic plaque. It is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and can present as angina (chest pain), myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, or sudden cardiac death. Major risk factors include hypertension, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and family history. Management ranges from lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy to revascularization procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass surgery. Research relevant to this topic in the journal addresses the diagnosis, treatment, and risk factors of ischemic and broader cardiovascular disease, including outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in very elderly patients and the emerging role of microRNAs as therapeutic strategies in ischemic heart disease. Related studies examine cardiovascular risk factors among elderly and hypertensive populations, the effects of smoking and vaping on the cardiovascular system, comorbidities in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure in primary care, gene polymorphisms associated with coronary heart disease, and assessment of cardiac function and sleep-disordered breathing. Across this work, early identification, risk-factor control, and improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches remain central to reducing the burden of ischemic heart disease.
