Overview
Congestive heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition in which the heart cannot pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body's needs, leading to a backup, or congestion, of fluid in the lungs, abdomen, and lower limbs. It can result from coronary artery disease, prior heart attack, long-standing high blood pressure, heart valve disorders, cardiomyopathy, and diabetes, among other causes. Typical symptoms include breathlessness, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and swelling of the legs and ankles. Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation, imaging, and biomarkers, while management combines lifestyle measures, medications, device therapy, and treatment of underlying causes. Heart failure is a major public health burden associated with frequent hospitalization and reduced survival. Within the cardiovascular scope of this heart-research journal, related peer-reviewed work has addressed heart failure in family medicine and the cardiorenal signaling pathways that link the heart and kidneys in heart failure, alongside studies of coronary interventions and cardiac biomarkers that bear on the conditions contributing to it. These contributions reflect the journal's broader engagement with cardiac function, ischemic disease, and the systemic consequences of impaired circulation. This page serves as a reference entry on congestive heart failure and its place in cardiovascular medicine.
