Overview

World health, often framed as global health, is the study and practice of improving health and achieving health equity for populations worldwide, understood within the interconnectedness of people, economies, and the environment. It addresses health problems that transcend national borders and concentrates on the determinants and outcomes that shape population health across diverse settings, with particular attention to disparities between high- and low-resource regions. Research in this field examines the performance and structure of health systems, including those of underdeveloped and developing countries, and the financial, economic, and governance factors, such as public financing and corruption, that influence outcomes like immunization coverage. It encompasses the burden of communicable and non-communicable disease, illustrated by studies of child mortality, the quality of life of older persons with chronic conditions, and the management of pandemics including COVID-19 and its social dimensions. Comparative and cross-national analyses, such as studies of dietary education, and assessments of health-impact and maternal-care services further define its scope. Sub-areas include health-systems strengthening, global disease burden and epidemiology, health equity and the social determinants of health, and the analysis of policy and financing. By examining health at a global scale and emphasizing equity, world health research informs strategies to improve outcomes and reduce disparities across populations and countries.
