Overview
Environmental health is the field concerned with how the physical, chemical and biological environment affects human health, and with preventing and controlling environmental hazards. It addresses exposures such as air, water and soil pollution, contaminated water and food, hazardous chemicals, and the health effects of climate change, drawing on disciplines including public health, epidemiology, toxicology, environmental science and engineering. The goal is to identify environmental risks and reduce the burden of disease they cause across populations. Reflecting the global-health focus of this journal and its companion titles, related research has examined a range of environmental health concerns. Studies include the occupational and environmental health effects of smoking bans, the use of metabolomic tools to assess environmental exposure, prevention and safety training to improve community health, the management of waterborne diseases through municipal decision-making, modelling of typhoid fever transmission, and vulnerabilities to health arising from climate change and extreme hydrological events. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to environmental health and the study of how environmental conditions shape health and how associated risks can be reduced.
