Overview
Women's health is the branch of health science concerned with the physical, reproductive, and psychosocial conditions that affect women across the life course, including those that present differently or exclusively in women. It encompasses reproductive and maternal health such as pregnancy, labour, and induced abortion; the menopausal transition and its symptoms; gynaecological and urogynaecological conditions including urinary incontinence; bone health and osteoporosis; and the mental health and chronic-disease burden carried by women. A central theme is the interaction of biological factors with social determinants, since access to care, education, economic and spousal support, and empowerment strongly shape outcomes, particularly in low-resource and rural settings. Research in this area examines maternal and child healthcare integration, the experience and productivity effects of menopause, support needs in early labour, osteoporosis knowledge and calcium intake, and the intersection of pain, depression, and disease in specific populations. Effective approaches combine clinical management with evidence-based health information, community engagement, and attention to gender equity. Understanding sex- and gender-specific risk factors is essential for designing screening, prevention, and treatment strategies that improve quality of life and reduce avoidable morbidity and mortality among women worldwide.
