Overview
General practitioners (GPs), also known as family physicians, are primary care doctors who provide first-contact, continuing, and comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages within their communities. Rather than focusing on a single organ system or disease, GPs address the full range of physical and psychological health concerns, emphasizing prevention, early diagnosis, the management of acute and chronic illness, and the coordination of care, including referral to specialists when needed. They play a central role in maintaining population health, managing patients with multiple long-term conditions, and supporting frail and elderly individuals over time. Research within general practice examines the practical realities of this work, including patient safety and clinical risk management in the primary care setting, the care of patients with chronic diseases and those who are frail, and the challenges of managing conditions such as childhood obesity in the community. Studies also explore the consultation itself as a core clinical encounter, reflecting how much of a general practitioner's effectiveness depends on communication and continuity. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to general practitioners and the organization, safety, and delivery of primary and community-based medical care.
