Overview

Animal behavior is the scientific study of how animals act, both individually and in groups, and how they interact with one another and with their environment. Also known as ethology, the field examines behaviors such as feeding, mating, communication, navigation, parental care, defense, and social organization, seeking to understand their mechanisms, development, function, and evolutionary origins. Researchers ask not only how a behavior is produced, through the nervous system, hormones, and sensory cues, but also why it exists, how it contributes to survival and reproduction, and how it has been shaped by natural selection. In insects and other invertebrates, behaviors such as foraging, swarming, chemical communication through pheromones, and complex social systems in colonies offer striking examples of how animal behavior can be studied and understood. Knowledge of animal behavior has practical value in agriculture, pest management, conservation, and animal welfare, informing how species are protected, controlled, or managed. The International Journal of Entomology provides a peer-reviewed, open-access venue for research on insects and related organisms, including their behavior and ecology. This page gathers research relevant to animal behavior and the study of how animals interact with their world.
