Overview

In the biomedical and nutritional sciences, the term fiber denotes several distinct structures unified by an elongated, thread-like form. Dietary fiber refers to the edible carbohydrate polymers, including cellulose, hemicellulose, pectins, beta-glucans, and resistant starch, that resist digestion in the human small intestine; it is classified as soluble or insoluble and as fermentable or non-fermentable, properties that determine its effects on bowel function, glycemic response, lipid metabolism, satiety, and the gut microbiota. In anatomy and histology, fibers describe the elongated cellular and extracellular elements that constitute tissues, such as muscle fibers, the nerve fibers and axonal tracts that conduct electrical signals, and the collagen and elastic fibers of connective tissue that provide tensile strength and resilience. In materials science, fibers are continuous filaments of natural or synthetic origin used in textiles and in fiber-reinforced composites valued for strength-to-weight performance. Accurate use of the term therefore depends on context, since the underlying composition, function, and methods of study differ markedly across these domains. Scholarly work on fibers spans nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and materials engineering, each addressing the structure and function appropriate to its field.
