Overview
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the coronavirus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the respiratory illness that spread worldwide from late 2019. It is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus in the family Coronaviridae, a group of viruses that cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological disease in humans and animals. SARS-CoV-2 is named for its close relationship to the earlier SARS coronavirus and is highly transmissible, spreading mainly via respiratory droplets and aerosols. Infection produces a wide clinical spectrum, from asymptomatic and mild cases to severe pneumonia, coagulopathy, and systemic complications. Research published under this topic spans the molecular evolution of the virus and analysis of its spike glycoprotein gene, laboratory detection through comparative evaluation of RT-PCR diagnostic assays, immune and cytokine responses in patients, microthrombosis and fibrin-network changes in pulmonary and renal tissue, vaccination outcomes and adverse events, and cell-therapy approaches to managing infection consequences. The journal also addresses the broader public-health and clinical reach of the pandemic, including its effects on surgical practice, stroke care, and mental health, reflecting how SARS-CoV-2 has been studied as both a virological and a wide-ranging clinical and societal challenge.
