Overview

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus (SARS-CoV), first recognized in an outbreak that began in 2002 and spread internationally. The disease is characterized by fever and progressive respiratory symptoms, and it brought coronaviruses to global prominence as agents capable of causing severe, transmissible respiratory disease, a concern renewed by the related virus SARS-CoV-2. Coronaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses whose spike glycoprotein mediates entry into host cells and serves as a focus for studies of evolution, diagnosis, and vaccine design. Much of the research published by the journal centers on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 as the contemporary continuation of this family, including molecular and evolutionary analysis of spike-protein gene sequences and comparison with other human and animal coronaviruses. Clinical and immunological studies examine cytokine profiles in patients, the pulmonary and renal microthrombi and fibrin changes seen in severe disease, and the evaluation of treatments such as hydroxychloroquine. Other work considers the animal interface of coronavirus infection, proposed preventive measures including dietary plant lectins, vaccine-associated liver injury, and the broader context of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Together these aspects address the virology, transmission, clinical features, treatment, and public-health implications of severe coronavirus-associated respiratory syndromes.
