Overview

Quarantine is a public-health measure that restricts the movement and contact of people who may have been exposed to a contagious disease but are not yet known to be infected, in order to prevent onward transmission during the incubation period; it is distinguished from isolation, which separates those already confirmed to be infectious. In the response to COVID-19, quarantine of exposed individuals, alongside isolation of cases, formed part of the non-pharmaceutical interventions used to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and reduce strain on health systems. While effective at interrupting transmission, quarantine and the broader social restrictions imposed during the pandemic carried psychological and social costs, including anxiety, depression, and the effects of social isolation, particularly among vulnerable groups such as older adults, and these consequences inform how such measures are designed and supported. Modelling of transmission dynamics helps quantify the effect of quarantine and related controls on epidemic spread. Recurring research themes include the mental health effects of quarantine and social isolation, transmission dynamics and modelling, immunomodulatory approaches, and the impact of restrictions on aging and wellbeing. Research published in this area examines quarantine and social distancing, their effects on transmission, and their psychological and social consequences, reflecting the journal's coverage of the control and impact of COVID-19.
