Overview

Prevention comprises the measures taken to avert the occurrence and spread of disease, and for coronavirus infections it spans the strategies that reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and protect susceptible populations. Preventive approaches are conventionally framed as primary prevention, which stops infection before it occurs through vaccination, hand hygiene, masking, physical distancing, ventilation, and isolation of cases; secondary prevention, which limits progression through early detection and treatment; and tertiary prevention, which reduces complications and onward harm. Non-pharmaceutical interventions and infection prevention and control practices in healthcare and community settings are central to outbreak containment, and their effectiveness depends on knowledge, attitudes, adherence, and contextual constraints. Prevention also encompasses health education, surveillance, and the management of risk among vulnerable groups, and the principles extend to other communicable and non-communicable conditions. Recurring research themes include transmission and prevention in community settings, infection prevention and control among healthcare workers, knowledge and practices related to preventive behaviour, and prevention of other infectious diseases. Research published in this area examines preventive strategies for coronavirus and other infections, the determinants of their uptake, and infection control in healthcare and community contexts, reflecting the journal's coverage of the prevention and control of COVID-19.
