Overview

An outbreak is the occurrence of cases of a disease in excess of what is normally expected in a defined community, geographical area, or season, signalling that an infectious agent is spreading and warranting investigation and control. Outbreaks vary in scale from localised clusters to epidemics and, when spread is global and sustained, pandemics, as exemplified by the worldwide dissemination of SARS-CoV-2. Their study draws on epidemiology to define case counts, trace chains of transmission, identify drivers, and characterise temporal and spatial patterns through surveillance and visualisation of reported cases. Quantitative approaches, including statistical and mathematical models, are used to estimate outbreak risk, project trajectories, and evaluate the impact of interventions. Research in this area encompasses the analysis and graphical display of registered cases across countries, the wider consequences of outbreaks for sectors such as education and staff training, and the mental-health burden that accompanies large-scale events. Estimation of the immunisation needed to curb spread and consideration of the role of animals also feature. The outbreak concept further applies to other settings, including nosocomial and agricultural events, underscoring how detection, response, and prevention strategies are framed across diverse contexts.
