Overview
Mental health during a pandemic concerns the psychological and emotional wellbeing of populations confronted by a large-scale infectious disease event and the societal disruptions it brings. Beyond fear of infection and bereavement, conditions such as prolonged uncertainty, quarantine, social isolation, and economic strain can elevate anxiety, depression, and stress across communities, while restrictions and altered routines reshape daily life and access to support. Study of this topic situates mental health within the broader context of the COVID-19 pandemic, examining the psychological dynamics of quarantine and social isolation and the mental-health consequences experienced by general and specific populations. Related work considers the situation of vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, and the wider social and economic conditions that mediate psychological burden. Investigations also address how knowledge, risk perception, and socio-demographic factors influence exposure and coping, alongside disruptions to education, services, and social capital that bear on wellbeing. Approaches in this area draw on survey-based and observational methods to characterise prevalence, determinants, and protective factors, and to identify needs for psychosocial support. The field thus frames mental health as an integral dimension of pandemic impact, requiring attention alongside efforts to control transmission and treat physical illness.
