Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic is the global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which spread internationally from late 2019 and became a worldwide public-health emergency. The virus transmits chiefly through respiratory droplets and aerosols from infected individuals, and the pandemic prompted governments to adopt containment measures such as distancing, testing, and movement restrictions to slow transmission and reduce pressure on health systems. Beyond its direct toll of infection and death, the pandemic produced extensive social, economic, educational, and psychological disruption, and these wider consequences are a major focus of study. Research published under this topic examines the pandemic's impact on the social and economic situation in Africa, its effects on surgical practice and on education, staff development, and training, and its consequences for vulnerable groups including persons with disabilities. Further work addresses mental health during the pandemic, the role of personal protective equipment such as eye, facial, torso, and foot protectors for current and future epidemics, immune-modulating approaches such as interferon-gamma to support the response, and the determinants of risk exposure including knowledge level and socio-demographic factors. The journal also situates the outbreak within the broader pattern of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and related scientific and geopolitical debates.
