Overview

COVID-19 is the infectious respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, first identified in late 2019 and subsequently declared a global pandemic. The illness ranges from asymptomatic or mild upper-respiratory infection to severe viral pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, multi-organ involvement, and death, with risk strongly influenced by age and underlying conditions. Coronaviruses are enveloped, positive-sense RNA viruses, and understanding the molecular biology, pathogenesis, transmission, and epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 has been central to the global response, alongside diagnostics, clinical management, vaccination, and public-health prevention measures. Research in this area spans the clinical, epidemiological, and societal dimensions of the pandemic. Published studies examine diagnostic and prognostic tools, including chest computed tomography findings and laboratory markers such as serum ferritin and composite severity scores used to assess mortality risk in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Other work analyzes the determinants of risk exposure, knowledge and socio-demographic factors shaping behavior, and the burden and risk of death across different national settings. The journal also publishes narrative reviews of the virus, investigations of emerging therapeutic approaches such as cell therapy, and analyses of the pandemic's wider effects on education, training, surgical practice, and social and economic conditions, as well as methods for detecting misinformation in the scientific literature.
