Overview

Coronaviruses and respiratory diseases concern the family of enveloped RNA viruses that infect the respiratory tract, causing illness that ranges from the common cold to severe syndromes such as SARS, MERS and COVID-19. These viruses target cells of the airways and lungs, and the resulting disease reflects both direct viral injury and the host inflammatory response, which in severe cases produces pneumonia and acute respiratory distress. Research in this area addresses the pathogenesis of affected cells and therapy, the molecular evolution of SARS-CoV-2 through analysis of spike-gene sequences, and the zoonotic dimension by which animals act as sources or hosts of coronaviruses. The immune mechanisms governing respiratory disease are central, including how the spike protein modulates interferon and cytokine expression and how immune modulators and dietary interventions might reduce infection risk. Diagnostic and clinical work, such as RT-PCR detection and the assessment of severe pulmonary involvement, links virological understanding to patient care, while the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases situates coronaviruses within the broader landscape of respiratory pathogens. Studying coronaviruses and respiratory disease together clarifies how these viruses cause illness, spread between hosts and species, and might be prevented or treated, informing both clinical management and public-health preparedness.
