Overview

Coronavirus transmission refers to the ways in which coronaviruses spread between hosts, including from person to person. For viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, transmission occurs chiefly through respiratory droplets and aerosols released when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes, with contaminated surfaces and close contact also contributing. Understanding the routes and dynamics of transmission underpins prevention measures such as face coverings, ventilation, distancing, and hygiene, and it informs decisions about gatherings, schools, and other settings where spread can occur. Within the International Journal of Coronaviruses, research relevant to coronavirus transmission includes work on transmission and prevention of COVID-19 in Ethiopia, a study of the reopening of schools and the adoption of universal mask-wearing in anticipation of sustained transmission, and modeling of the outbreak risk of COVID-19 through data analysis. Related work examining cross-species considerations and the molecular characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 contributes to understanding how the virus spreads. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to coronavirus transmission and its prevention.
