Overview

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, first identified in late 2019 and subsequently declared a pandemic. Its presentation ranges from asymptomatic or mild illness to severe pneumonia and multi-organ involvement, and the global response combined clinical management, diagnostics, public-health measures, and vaccine development. Research published by the journal spans the clinical, diagnostic, and societal dimensions of COVID-19. Clinical studies examine prognostic markers, including serum ferritin as a predictor of in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 pneumonia, mortality-risk assessment tools, and the role of chest computed tomography in diagnosis and triage. Epidemiological work analyzes risk of death and the influence of knowledge and sociodemographic factors on exposure, with several studies set in African contexts. The disease's wider impact is reflected in research on COVID-19's effects on education, staff development, and surgical practice, as well as on the social and economic situation in affected regions. Methodological contributions include data-mining approaches for detecting conspiracy theories in scientific articles related to the pandemic. Narrative reviews summarize the emerging understanding of the disease. Together these aspects address the diagnosis, prognosis, management, and broad public-health and social consequences of COVID-19 across diverse settings.
