Overview

Coronavirus and social distancing concerns the use of physical-distancing measures to interrupt the transmission of coronaviruses, particularly SARS-CoV-2, and the wider effects of those measures on society. Social distancing reduces opportunities for respiratory transmission by increasing the physical separation between people and limiting gatherings, and it is typically deployed alongside complementary interventions such as mask wearing and the staged reopening of schools and workplaces. As a non-pharmaceutical intervention, its rationale rests on the dynamics of the outbreak, since reducing contact rates lowers the effective reproduction of the virus and slows epidemic growth. Research situates distancing within the broader epidemiology of COVID-19, including analyses of transmission, risk of death, and the factors, such as knowledge and demographic circumstances, that shape exposure and adherence. The topic also recognizes the social, educational, and economic consequences of sustained distancing, from disruptions to schooling and training to effects on social and intellectual capital and mental well-being. Sub-areas include the epidemiological basis of physical distancing, combined non-pharmaceutical interventions such as masking and school measures, behavioral determinants of adherence, and the social and economic trade-offs of prolonged restrictions. Understanding social distancing requires balancing its effect on transmission against its broader impact on communities during coronavirus outbreaks.
