Overview

Beta coronavirus (Betacoronavirus) is one of the genera within the family Coronaviridae, comprising enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses whose members include several human pathogens such as SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2, the agent of COVID-19. These viruses are characterized by their crown-like surface spike glycoproteins, which mediate host-cell attachment and entry. The International Journal of Coronaviruses publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research on the biology, evolution, and clinical impact of these viruses. Relevant articles include a study of the molecular evolution of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, a narrative review of COVID-19, an analysis of SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein-coding gene sequences from Tunisian cases compared with other human and animal coronaviruses, work on cytokine profiling in COVID-19 patients, and a review of COVID-19 vaccine development. Together these reflect active study of betacoronavirus genomics, pathogenesis, and immune response. Readers interested in coronavirus genomics, viral evolution, and COVID-19 pathogenesis will find peer-reviewed, open-access studies relevant to beta coronavirus.
