Overview

ARDS and COVID refers to acute respiratory distress syndrome occurring as a severe complication of coronavirus disease, in which SARS-CoV-2 infection triggers diffuse alveolar injury, increased pulmonary capillary permeability, and accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the air sacs that impairs gas exchange and causes refractory hypoxemia. The syndrome reflects an overactive immune and inflammatory response, and severe COVID-19 is associated with dysregulated cytokine signaling that amplifies lung damage and can progress to respiratory failure. Research relevant to this area characterizes cytokine profiling in COVID-19 patients, including the phase preceding hyperinflammation, and the influence of viral spike protein on interferon and cytokine gene expression, illuminating the immunopathology that links infection to lung injury. Related work evaluates therapeutic approaches investigated during the pandemic, including cell-based therapy and pharmacological agents, and the role of chest computed tomography in assessing pulmonary involvement and severity. Studies also address the broader epidemiology and clinical features of the novel coronavirus and the place of animals in transmission and research. Across these strands the topic connects virology, immunology, and critical-care medicine to understand how coronavirus infection produces severe acute lung injury and to inform diagnosis, risk stratification, and management of the most serious respiratory consequences of COVID-19.
