Overview

Pathology is the branch of medicine and biological science concerned with the causes, mechanisms, and effects of disease, and with the laboratory examination of tissues, cells, and body fluids used to diagnose it. By studying the structural and functional changes that disease produces in cells and organs, pathologists identify the underlying basis of illness, classify disorders, and guide treatment decisions. The field spans anatomical pathology, which examines tissue and cellular specimens through techniques such as histology, cytology, and immunohistochemistry, and clinical or laboratory pathology, which analyzes blood and other fluids to detect biochemical, hematological, and microbiological abnormalities. In the context of clinical microbiology, pathology is closely tied to the identification of infectious agents and the host responses they provoke, supporting both individual diagnosis and broader epidemiological and public-health investigation. Advances in molecular and contemporary pathology techniques continue to refine the ability to distinguish among diseases that may appear similar, improving diagnostic accuracy and informing targeted therapy. The International Journal of Clinical Microbiology publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to disease mechanisms, diagnostic methods, and the laboratory investigation of human and animal infections, and this page gathers work relevant to the study and practice of pathology.
