Overview
Immune system disorders are conditions in which the immune response is deficient, misdirected, or excessive, producing disease through failure to defend against infection, attack on the body's own tissues, or harmful reactions to otherwise innocuous antigens. They are conventionally grouped into immunodeficiencies, in which one or more components of innate or adaptive immunity are absent or impaired; autoimmune disorders, in which loss of self-tolerance drives immune attack on host tissues; allergic and hypersensitivity disorders, in which the response is exaggerated; and dysregulated inflammatory states. The underlying mechanisms involve lymphocytes, antibodies, complement, cytokines, and the signalling networks that normally keep these effectors in balance, and disturbance at any point can manifest as recurrent infection, tissue damage, or chronic inflammation. Diagnosis combines clinical assessment with laboratory testing of cell counts, antibody and autoantibody profiles, complement, and specific functional assays. The articles collected here touch on laboratory tests and treatment of immune thrombocytopenia, cytokine and inflammatory mediator involvement in conditions such as gestational diabetes and parasitic infection, and cancer immunotherapy that harnesses the immune system therapeutically. Recurring themes include immune regulation, the role of inflammatory mediators, biomarker-based diagnosis, and immunomodulatory treatment. The topic sits at the intersection of clinical immunology, microbiology, and laboratory medicine.
