Overview

Gram-negative bacteria are a major group of bacteria distinguished by the structure of their cell wall, which has a thin peptidoglycan layer surrounded by an outer membrane and does not retain the crystal-violet stain in the Gram staining procedure. This outer membrane contributes to their characteristic resistance to many antibiotics and host defenses, and many clinically important pathogens, including species responsible for hospital-acquired and community infections, are gram-negative. They also play significant roles in the environment, including in decomposition and nutrient cycling. This peer-reviewed, open-access research collection includes work on gram-negative organisms and their clinical significance. Published studies have examined Klebsiella pneumoniae, documenting rising carbapenem resistance and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in a tertiary care hospital, investigated Porphyromonas gingivalis and its response to ultrasonication, and detected carbapenem resistance mechanisms among avian pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from broiler chickens. Together these contributions span identification, antimicrobial resistance, and the clinical and veterinary relevance of gram-negative bacteria, offering readers a grounded reference on this group of microorganisms and the challenges they pose in clinical microbiology and infection control.
