Overview
Bacterial infections are diseases caused by the invasion and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria within a host, producing illness through tissue invasion, toxin production, and the inflammatory and immune responses they provoke. They span a wide spectrum of severity and anatomical sites, from localized skin, respiratory, and urinary-tract infections to systemic and life-threatening conditions such as sepsis and meningitis. Bacteria are characterized by their morphology, staining, metabolism, and virulence factors, and their identification together with antimicrobial-susceptibility testing guides therapy. Antibiotics remain the mainstay of treatment, but the global emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms—through mechanisms including carbapenem and methicillin resistance—has become a defining clinical challenge, intensifying the need for stewardship, rapid diagnostics, and new agents. The peer-reviewed research in this area examines bacterial infection and resistance across settings, including the rising threat of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and its susceptibility patterns in a tertiary hospital, antibiotic-resistant urinary-tract infection, in vitro activity of iclaprim against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus non-susceptible to other agents, antibiotic-prescribing practices for upper respiratory tract infection, and the role of nutrition and microbiota in host defense. Recurring themes include the identification and antimicrobial-susceptibility profiling of bacterial pathogens, the surveillance and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, the evaluation of new and existing antimicrobial agents, and the promotion of rational prescribing to preserve treatment efficacy across hospital and community settings.
