Overview
Bacterial cultures are populations of bacteria grown under controlled laboratory conditions, typically on nutrient media that support their multiplication so that they can be isolated, identified, and studied. Culturing is a foundational technique in microbiology and clinical diagnostics: it allows organisms to be recovered from clinical or environmental samples, characterised by their growth and metabolic properties, tested for susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, and used as the starting material for research and biotechnological production. In clinical microbiology, culture underpins the diagnosis of infection, the identification of pathogenic species and strains, and the surveillance of antibiotic resistance. Within this journal's scope, related research includes the isolation and screening of polyhydroxybutyrate-producing halotolerant bacterial strains from a saline environment, demonstrating culture-based recovery and characterisation of bacteria; and a study of carbapenem resistance and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in Klebsiella pneumoniae from a tertiary care hospital, which relies on culture and susceptibility testing to track resistant pathogens. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to bacterial cultures and their role in identifying microorganisms, monitoring resistance, and advancing microbiological science.
