Overview
Bacteria are single-celled prokaryotic microorganisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles, possess a cell wall typically built on peptidoglycan, and constitute one of the fundamental domains of life. They display extensive diversity in morphology, metabolism, and ecology, ranging from cocci and bacilli to spirilla, and are differentiated by criteria such as Gram staining, oxygen requirement, and biochemical and molecular profiles. Bacteria drive essential global processes, decomposing organic matter, cycling nitrogen and carbon, and forming commensal and symbiotic communities, while pathogenic species cause infectious disease through colonization, toxin production, and biofilm formation. In clinical microbiology, the isolation, identification, and antimicrobial-susceptibility testing of bacterial pathogens, together with the surveillance of resistance mechanisms such as carbapenem resistance, are central to diagnosis, treatment, and infection control, and the rise of antimicrobial resistance has heightened the importance of accurate characterization. The peer-reviewed research collected under this topic spans molecular identification of bacterial strains, antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation in enteric pathogens, isolation of pathogenic and probiotic bacteria, bacteriological assessment of water quality, and the response of organisms to physical and chemical interventions. Understanding bacterial structure, physiology, genetics, and ecology is foundational to microbiology, public health, and medicine, underpinning the diagnosis and management of infection, the stewardship of antimicrobials, and the beneficial use of bacteria in biotechnology and environmental science.
