Overview

The adaptive immune system is the branch of immunity that develops targeted, specific responses to particular pathogens and retains a memory of them for faster protection on re-exposure. It is mediated chiefly by lymphocytes, the T cells and B cells, with B cells producing antibodies (immunoglobulins) that recognize specific antigens and T cells coordinating and carrying out cell-mediated defences. Unlike the innate immune system, which responds rapidly but non-specifically, adaptive immunity takes longer to mount on first encounter but provides highly specific, long-lasting protection and underlies the effectiveness of vaccination. Its function can change with age, disease, and exposure to environmental factors, and its interplay with innate defences shapes overall resistance to infection. Within the scope of clinical microbiology, the adaptive immune system is studied in relation to host defence against bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens, immune responses to infection and vaccination, immunoglobulin and antibody dynamics, and how immunity is altered by aging and other conditions. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the adaptive immune system and to the broader study of immunity, infection, and clinical microbiology.
