Overview

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells that acquire the capacity to invade surrounding tissue and to spread, or metastasize, to distant sites. It arises through the stepwise accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations that activate oncogenes, inactivate tumor suppressors, and disrupt the normal controls on cell division, apoptosis, and differentiation. Tumors are classified by tissue of origin and molecular profile, and their behavior reflects interactions between malignant cells and the surrounding microenvironment. Research in this area spans the full continuum of cancer control: molecular and cellular mechanisms of tumor formation and relapse, including the regulation of specific genes in colorectal cancer and the cellular determinants of therapeutic resistance; prevention through screening and early detection, exemplified by extensive work on cervical and colorectal cancer screening uptake and program design; epidemiological surveillance of incidence in defined populations; and the psychosocial dimensions of living with cancer. Complementary and dietary approaches to prevention are also examined. Together these strands address how cancers initiate and progress, how populations can be screened and protected, and how outcomes and quality of life can be improved across diverse clinical and geographic settings.
