Overview

Water treatment is the set of physical, chemical, and biological processes used to remove contaminants from water and render it suitable for drinking, agriculture, aquaculture, or safe environmental discharge. Treatment trains typically combine coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection for drinking water, and biological, chemical, and physical unit operations such as aerated lagoons for wastewater, targeting suspended solids, organic matter, pathogens, nutrients, heavy metals, and toxins. Effective treatment protects public health by reducing waterborne disease and safeguards aquatic ecosystems from pollution. The research themes reflected here include metallic-iron-based water treatment, decision-making strategies to combat waterborne disease, and the design of aerated lagoons for dairy-industry wastewater. Water-quality assessment features strongly, including analyses of public and household water sources, the bacteriological and physico-chemical quality of borehole water, and the use of bivalves and mosquito larvae as bioindicators of pollution. Other work addresses the attenuation of cyanotoxins by irradiation, the impact of metal and pesticide contamination, and the links between water quality, sanitation, and health outcomes such as diarrhoeal disease and undernutrition. Across these topics, contaminant removal, monitoring, and safe water supply recur. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies, assessments, and reviews addressing water-treatment processes, water-quality evaluation, and the protection of water resources and aquatic environments.
