Overview

Water quality is a measure of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water and its suitability for purposes such as drinking, aquaculture, agriculture, and supporting aquatic ecosystems. It is assessed through parameters including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nutrient and contaminant levels, and the presence of microorganisms. Maintaining good water quality is essential for human health, the productivity of fish farming and aquaculture, and the health of aquatic environments, while poor water quality can spread waterborne disease, harm aquatic life, and degrade ecosystems. Monitoring and managing water quality is therefore central to environmental and aquaculture science. Research published by the journal addresses water quality across diverse sources and settings. Work includes water quality analysis of public and household water sources, assessment of the impact of agricultural land-use practices on water quality in a wetland, an assessment of water quality in the Blue Nile River, and characterization of groundwater quality in different regions. Additional studies examine the effects of water replenishment on lake and wetland water quality and the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of borehole water. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to water quality, its assessment, and its importance for aquaculture, health, and the environment.
