Overview
Fishes are aquatic, gill-bearing vertebrates that lack limbs with digits, encompassing the jawless lampreys and hagfishes, the cartilaginous sharks and rays, and the dominant ray-finned bony fishes (Actinopterygii) that account for most living species. They obtain dissolved oxygen across gill lamellae, regulate buoyancy through a swim bladder or oil reserves, and maintain osmotic balance differently in freshwater versus marine settings, where ion exchange and water flux are actively managed. Ichthyological study spans systematics and species identification, reproductive biology, growth and condition factors, population dynamics, and the physiological responses of fish to their environment. Molecular tools such as DNA barcoding and phylogenetic analysis increasingly support species delimitation and the resolution of cryptic diversity, while developmental genetics links conserved gene families to body plan and organ formation. Applied work addresses aquaculture nutrition and dietary protein optimisation, survival and growth performance during grow-out, and the effects of pollutants, pesticides, and heavy metals on fish health, haematology, and behaviour. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on freshwater and marine taxa, including cyprinids, tilapias, catfishes, salmonids, and flatfishes, covering reproduction, fisheries management, biodiversity assessment, and aquatic toxicology relevant to both wild stocks and cultured production.
