Overview
The immune system is the integrated network of cells, tissues, organs, and soluble mediators that protects the body against pathogens, malignant cells, and other threats while maintaining tolerance to self. It comprises innate immunity, which provides rapid non-specific defence through barriers, phagocytes, complement, and pattern-recognition responses, and adaptive immunity, which generates antigen-specific responses mediated by T and B lymphocytes and immunological memory through antibodies such as immunoglobulins. Immune competence shapes susceptibility to infection, the course of inflammation, vaccine responses, and the surveillance of tumours, and it changes across the lifespan, with immunosenescence and frailty altering function in older adults. Research collected here reflects these themes, including the relationship between frailty and the immune system, the role of immunoglobulin responses in therapeutic development and in ageing, the use of interferon-gamma and other immunomodulators during the COVID-19 pandemic, and immunoassay and immunogenomic approaches for monitoring cancer and infectious disease. Additional contributions examine immune thrombocytopenia, dietary and lectin-based modulation of immune risk, and the immunological dimensions of chronic disease. Together these peer-reviewed studies span innate and adaptive defence, immunomonitoring, and the interaction between immune function, ageing, and disease.
