Overview
Tachycardia is a cardiac arrhythmia defined by a resting heart rate exceeding 100 beats per minute in adults, arising when the heart's electrical impulses are generated or conducted abnormally fast. It is broadly classified by origin into supraventricular tachycardias, including sinus tachycardia, atrial tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and flutter, and atrioventricular nodal and reentrant tachycardias, and ventricular tachycardias originating below the bundle of His, which carry greater risk of haemodynamic compromise and sudden death. Mechanisms include enhanced automaticity, triggered activity, and reentry circuits, and diagnosis relies on electrocardiography, including techniques to localize the origin of focal atrial tachycardias from the 12-lead ECG, along with electrophysiological study. Within cardiology, tachycardia is examined in the context of structural and congenital heart disease, valvular and rheumatic conditions, ischaemia, and systemic factors that alter cardiac rate and rhythm, and its evaluation forms part of the assessment of cardiac function and arrhythmic risk. Management ranges from vagal manoeuvres and pharmacological rate or rhythm control to catheter ablation and device therapy. This topic gathers peer-reviewed research relevant to the mechanisms, electrocardiographic characterization, and clinical context of tachyarrhythmias, situating disordered heart rate within the broader study of cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology.
