Overview

Pulmonary hypertension is a hemodynamic disorder defined by abnormally elevated pressure in the pulmonary arterial circulation, resulting from narrowing, stiffening, or remodeling of the pulmonary vessels, increased pulmonary blood flow, or elevated left-heart filling pressures. Sustained pressure overload strains the right ventricle and can progress to right heart failure, with symptoms of dyspnea, fatigue, and chest pain. Clinical classification spans several groups by underlying cause, and evaluation relies on echocardiography, hemodynamic assessment, and identification of contributing cardiac, pulmonary, or systemic conditions. Research relevant to this topic addresses pulmonary vascular pressure, associated conditions, and right-heart involvement. Studies examine pulmonary hypertension in an HIV-infected population, elevated tricuspid regurgitant velocity as a marker in sickle cell anemia, and microRNAs as diagnostic and therapeutic tools in hypertension. Related cardiopulmonary work covers cardiorenal signaling in heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease phenotypes and comorbidities, heart failure in primary care, congenital heart defects, and respiratory imaging findings. Additional studies on single-ventricle physiology and congenital diaphragmatic hernia address conditions associated with altered pulmonary circulation. This peer-reviewed literature supports clinicians and researchers concerned with the recognition, mechanisms, and management of pulmonary hypertension and the disorders that contribute to it.
