Portal hypertension is elevated blood pressure in the portal venous system, which carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the liver. This condition most commonly results from cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases that obstruct blood flow through the liver, leading to serious complications including gastric varices, ascites, and hepatic decompensation.
