Overview
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a chronic condition in which the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is persistently elevated. Blood pressure is recorded as systolic over diastolic values, and sustained readings above accepted thresholds define hypertension. Often without obvious symptoms, it is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney damage, which makes its detection, monitoring, and control central to preventive medicine. Management combines lifestyle measures with antihypertensive medication, and accurate measurement is essential to both diagnosis and research. Studies published in Hypertension and Cardiology examine the condition across its epidemiological, clinical, and methodological dimensions: surveys have assessed the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of hypertension in populations in China, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Chad, including among adolescents and in hypertensive crisis; clinical work has explored cardiac mechanics in hypertensive patients with preserved ejection fraction and vascular damage assessed by carotid intima-media thickness in newly diagnosed young patients; and other articles address the role of sports and exercise medicine, microRNAs as potential diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and recommended standards for measuring blood pressure in research. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to hypertension and its cardiovascular consequences.
