Overview
The heart is the muscular organ at the centre of the circulatory system, a four-chambered pump comprising two atria and two ventricles that propels blood through the pulmonary and systemic circulations to deliver oxygen and nutrients and remove metabolic waste. Its rhythmic contraction is driven by an intrinsic electrical conduction system originating in the sinoatrial node, and its function depends on coordinated myocardial contractility, valvular competence, coronary perfusion, and neurohormonal regulation. Within Hypertension and Cardiology, the heart is studied across its structure, function, and the diseases that impair it, including ischaemic and rheumatic heart disease, valvular disorders, congenital heart defects, heart failure, and the effects of chronic pressure overload from hypertension. Research in this area encompasses the assessment of cardiac function and mechanics, valvular heart disease in special populations such as pregnancy, congenital defects in neonates, ischaemic and rheumatic heart disease, cardiac biomarkers for risk stratification, and in vitro evaluation of myocardial function using cardiomyocyte cell lines. Regulatory mechanisms such as microRNAs in ischaemic heart disease, and haemodynamic responses to physiological stress, further illuminate cardiac physiology and pathology. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research relevant to cardiac structure and function, the major forms of heart disease, and the diagnostic and mechanistic study of myocardial performance within cardiovascular medicine.
