Overview

Coronary heart disease (CHD), also called coronary artery disease, is a cardiovascular condition in which the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or obstructed, most commonly by atherosclerotic plaque composed of cholesterol, fat and other substances. The resulting reduction in blood flow can produce angina (chest pain), breathlessness and, when an artery is acutely occluded, myocardial infarction. CHD is among the leading causes of death worldwide and is closely linked to modifiable risk factors including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet, as well as non-modifiable factors such as age, sex and genetic predisposition. Management spans lifestyle modification, pharmacological therapy and revascularisation procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention. Research published in this journal addresses multiple dimensions of the disease and its broader cardiovascular context, including the prognostic and therapeutic potential of microRNAs in ischaemic heart disease, outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in elderly patients, genetic polymorphisms associated with coronary heart disease risk, the influence of dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular outcomes, and the cardiovascular effects of involuntary smoking and vaping. Together these studies reflect ongoing investigation of the pathophysiology, genetics, risk factors, prevention and clinical treatment of coronary and related cardiovascular disorders.
